Start of competitive season
The competitive season got under way this week. In the Chiltern and Thames Mixed League, Chesham had a good start to the competition by taking maximum points off Broadway in their home and away matches. Chesham won at home 71 – 31 – highest rink Colin Parsons, Sue Faulks and Keith Patrick (29 – 10) and away 70 – 36 – top rink Helen Fillery, Brian Wright and Chris Harvey (24 - 9).
In the National Double Fours competition Chesham A team beat Amersham by 55 – 23, the two rink scores being Nathan Harvey, Frank McCartney, Chris Harvey and Mick Skerry 26 – 12, and Howard Cave, John Holland, Brian Wright and Keith Patrick 29 – 11.
In the week's friendly matches, Chesham's men won away at Hemel Hempstead by 109 – 89, with top rink John Hooper, Mike Abbott, Michael Richards and Chris Fillery 28 – 9.
However on Saturday, away at Chalfont St Giles, Chesham lost a close match by 89 – 97 shots, winning on 2 of the 5 rinks, the best score being Barbara Strudwick, Robbie Williams, Chris Smethurst and Alan Cohn 23 – 12.
The ladies also lost their triples match to High Wycombe 50 – 61, top rink was Jean McNab, Helen Fillery and June Holland 25 – 17.
Worse was to follow on Sunday when Chesham lost the first round of the Jubilee cup also against High Wycombe. Wycombe won on all six rinks with a score of 84 – 142, a lead which Wycombe captain Stan Webb was confident they could defend in the return leg in July.
